The third time was the charm for the Marlow Lady Outlaws, as they defeated the Comanche Lady Indians, 36-32 Thursday in the semifinals of the Stephens County Tournament.
The Lady Outlaws will meet the Velma-Alma Lady Comets in the tournament finals at 7 p.m. Saturday.
Velma-Alma knocked off Empire, 62-34.
Empire and Comanche meet at 4 p.m. Saturday for third place.
Marlow 36, Comanche 32
The Lady Outlaws took a 23-22 lead to start the fourth on free throws by Taylor Leippe. M’Kenzie Hill hit both ends of a 1-and-1 with 5:17 to play to make it 29-22.
Cassi Sanders trimmed the lead to 30-26 with 2:48 to play with free throws.
With just over one minute to play, Hill hit two more free throws for a 32-30 edge. Skyler Newberry missed her first free throw but hit her second with 40 seconds left for a 33-31 edge. Sanders hit on a free throw to close it to 33-32, but Leippe went 1-for-1 at the other end. Sanders was called for a charge with nine seconds left, and was the third Comanche player to foul out in the fourth minutes later. Leippe hit both of the ensuing free throws for the 36-32 win.
“I felt like it was a coin toss with us and Comanche on the seed. Our goal was to come win it. I felt like we had as good a chance as anyone,” Marlow head coach Kirk Harris said.
With 2:48 to play in the third, Jacquelyn Martin’s baseline jumper and free throws from Nicole Martin trimmed the Lady Outlaws’ lead to 17-16. A few moments later, Cassi Sanders put the Lady Indians in front with a pair of free throws. However, Marlow’s Taylor Leippe converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to give MHS a 20-18 edge, only to have Sanders tie the game at 20 with free throws, and CHS took a 22-21 edge into the final period.
Neither team started out well. Marlow was 2-of-8 from the field, while the Lady Indians were 1-of-7. MHS had nine turnovers in the first quarter, and Comanche had seven.
With 5:54 left in the second, Leippe hit two shots from the charity stripe to give the Lady Outlaws a 6-3 edge and start a 9-0 run that ended with a Taylor Leippe trey. With 1:03 left before the half, Nicole Martin hit two free throws to close the gap to 15-5. Hanna Wall rattled in a 2 to make it an 8-point game at the half.
Newberry got the first bucket of the game with a bucket from down low. Stephanie Dunlap evened the score with just over five minutes to play, but Newberry put the Lady Outlaws back in front with a short jumper in the lane.
Leippe led all scorers with 18 points, and Sanders paced CHS with 15.
Velma-Alma 62, Empire 34
Rindi Alexander hit a trey from half court to give the Lady Comets a 10-7 going into the second quarter.
That seemed to have sparked V-A on as it blew open the game after that.
Shelby Hays drove to the hoop for 2 with 6:13, and then she hit a trey to push the lead to 17-8. Kenzie Cogswell’s 3-pointer broke things loose as V-A streaked out to a 25-8 lead before EHS head coach Rodney Strutton called a time out with 2:56 left in the second period.
Morgan Sellers banked in a shot to stop the Lady Comets’ run, but Alexander answered that with a 3-pointer with 1:32 left before the intermission.
Kaitlin Anderson’s traditional 3-point play lifted the Lady Comets to a 33-11 halftime lead.
Jessica England hit a 3-pointer to close the gap to 37-14 to start the third, but Alexander hit a 3 at the 2:54 mark to make it a 41-14 edge, as V-A led 48-16 after three quarters of play.
Natalie Whitt led the Lady Bulldogs’ charge with 12, while Alexander finished with 21.
“I really thought it was going to be a 7- or 10-point game,” V-A head coach Rob Alexander said. “Once again, we played good defense and felt our way along on offense. Sellers and Whitt are good players for them, and I thought Kenzie and Shelby did a good job on them. I thought Rindi did a good job of putting pressure on their point guard (England).”
